As a new member of the Oakland Board, I hadn’t yet experienced the perception problem that is associated with the drag genre; it wasn’t part of my context, until recently. I stopped at a few businesses in the community seeking donations for the Fabulous Chinese Auction that is a part of our annual How the [...]

We’re kicking off Halloween in the Yo this weekend on Thursday Night with Stage Fright at the Oakland Center for the Arts, October’s edition of our monthly open mic night. This time, performers in costume get in free. The guys who brought us Rock and Roll Jesus are rumored to have a new skit ready [...]
Live-ish blogging from The Stage

Well friends, the other three bloggers, Tyler, Scott, and Crse, all got their “live from the O Stage” posts up before me. Scott kept it short and funny, mostly focused somehow on cake. This is what I love about Scott; the man knows what’s important. Tyler came in second with his reviews and his wife [...]

I’m a little late to the party with this announcement because I was too busy being all political, but The Stage at the Oakland is celebrating its third anniversary tonight! From 8 to 11, it’s an open mic event that is unparalleled in the area and delightfully wrong in so many ways (4 words…rock and [...]

Last week, I was thrilled to join the board of the Oakland Center for the Arts. The board, although only one part of the O’s unique spirit in the YO, is a fabulous team of thinkers, workers, and pro-Yo folks. This Saturday, the O family is presenting our season, thanking our friends for their support, and introducing ourselves [...]
I didn’t want to write about THE LIST

There are so many of us Yo bloggers that things could get a little redundant. I’m a Yo lover who lives in the Bo (my brand new, as of today coinage), so I usually try to provide the perspective of one with a foot in both worlds, city and suburb.
I originally chose not to write [...]
Farmers’ Market: Downtown Today!

The Northside Farmers’ Market, which began six years ago at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown, has added a downtown venue. In addition to its traditional Saturday morning, 9-noon slot, fresh, local Famers’ Market food is available on Tuesday afternoons from 3-6 in downtown’s Central Square.
Pick up some delicious peaches and blueberries, tomatoes and [...]
Festival Fun

Here are the Oakland’s Brooke Slanina and Robert Dennick Joki at the Oakland/Victorian Players/Youngstown Playhouse/YACTA tent. As predicted, the festival was a blast. My girls designed their own tiles and windchimes at the children’s art tent, and we took in a Nova presentation about black holes at the planetarium. Jim sampled some Polish cuisine (the [...]
